In 2018, our research assistants had amazing opportunities to present at national psychology conferences under the guidance of Dr. Christina Chin-Newman (CSUEB) and Dr. Erin Woodhead (San Jose State University)! It turns out that the American Psychological Society (APS) and American Psychological Association (APA) conferences were both held in San Francisco this year. A total of 6 RAs helped to present research posters related to the LAND Project and Inclusive Performing Arts (IPA) Project, with this being the first conference experience for 5 of them!

LAND Project research findings covered college students' self-disclosure of mental health status, age-related differences in self-disclosure of disability status, group work experiences of students with disabilities, reasons why college students do not utilize accommodations, and intersectionality of identity for student-mothers with disabilities.

The IPA research applied Carl Rogers' theoretical ideas about creativity to the interview data collected from students in an inclusive performance ensemble class (Rogers wrote about the importance of providing psychological safety and psychological freedom in order for someone's creativity to flourish).

In other exciting news, the LAND Project has hit a milestone with the first peer-reviewed article now officially in press at the Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability! "It's All in Your Head: Students with Psychiatric Disability Navigating the University Environment," based on Suzy Kain's senior thesis, analyzes 14 interviews of college students with psychiatric disabilities, such as mood disorders or anxiety disorders.

Dr. Chin-Newman is also deeply honored to have received the Outstanding Faculty Mentor of Students Award from Cal State East Bay. This distinction recognizes the importance of her varied ACE activities that involve mentoring students and alumni in research.
